Dwayne Haskins was stranded on Florida highway, getting gas when he was struck by a truck, 911 call reveals
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was stuck on a Florida freeway and was about to refuel on the day he was tragically hit and killed by a dump truck, according to a 911 call his wife made the morning of his death.
A sound obtained by South Florida sports journalist Andy Slater reveals Calabrian Haskins’ painful concerns about her husband when on April 9 he did not answer any of her calls for minutes after he initially told her he was going to refuel his car , which is stuck on I-595 West just outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

“My husband is stuck on the side of the freeway. He had to go for a walk and refuel and then he said he was going back to the car on the highway, ”Haskins explained to Calabria.
“We were on the phone and he said he would call me back after he finished pouring gas and I called and called and he wasn’t answering. Finally, after 10 minutes of ringing, he finally stopped working. Now it doesn’t work. I know its location.”

“I just want someone to go out in the neighborhood and see if their car is there and if it’s okay, and if something’s wrong with them,” she continued.
“It’s not like him not to call me back.”
Dispatch explained to her that there had been an “incident” in the area and that a “rescue” was in place, prompting a weeping Calabra to ask for a description.

Haskins, who had trained with the Steelers in Florida, was attempting to walk westbound lanes on Interstate 595 when he was hit by a dump truck around 6:37 am Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the crime scene.

The second call from the worried woman appears to contain details of the witness’s account of the time Haskins was hit.
– Oh my God. What’s wrong with you? Get off the road! you could hear the woman screaming at 911.

“I’m sorry, madam, for trying to hear you and I’m in the middle of 95,” said the woman with tears in her eyes. “A man hit in front of me. I was driving down the road and I saw a dump truck hit the man.”

Haskins, who signed a one-year limited tender for free agents this season, was expected to compete for a Pittsburgh job following veteran Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.
